Treaties Recognition Week 2024

  • Ontario is marking the ninth annual Treaties Recognition Week by encouraging students and the public to learn about treaties from diverse Indigenous perspectives and develop greater understanding of the importance of treaties in Ontario.
  • Treaties are legally binding agreements that set out the rights, responsibilities, and relationships of First Nations and the federal and provincial governments. They form the basis of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
  • We continue to enhance government awareness and understanding of Indigenous peoples, histories, and perspectives to further advance meaningful reconciliation. Ontario is sharing treaty education resources to help Ontario residents understand treaty rights, treaty relationships, and their relevance today.
  • Our government is committed to strengthening equitable and respectful relationships with Indigenous partners and communities to enable a better future for all Ontarians.
