Ontario’s Energy Plan Unlocking Opportunities in the Digital Economy
July 2, 2025
- As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, the province is embracing the growth of the data centre sector as a strategic opportunity to drive investment, innovation and job creation.
- As this global demand for AI, cloud computing and data processing increases, Ontario is taking action to prioritize electricity for data centres that support the province’s economic interests, including those that create high-quality jobs, assist in domestic data hosting and strengthen Ontario’s position in the digital economy.
- This Canada-first plan also strengthens Canada’s data sovereignty by keeping sensitive information on Canadian soil and protecting it from misuse and weaker foreign privacy regimes.
- These measures will help ensure that data centres that create high-quality jobs, strengthen Ontario’s digital economy and support domestic data hosting are quickly approved for connection to the grid.
- This initiative is a key part of Energy for Generations: Ontario’s Integrated Plan to Power the Strongest Economy in the G7, which brings together all energy sources under one coordinated strategy to meet rising demand, protect the grid, and ensure Ontario has the affordable, reliable, and clean power needed to grow our economy—particularly in high-demand sectors like digital technology.
