Ontario Restoring Safety to Parks and Public Spaces

  • Mayors and residents from communities across Ontario have been clear that enough is enough when it comes to encampments and illegal drug use in our parks and public spaces.
  • There is an urgent need to do more. We are providing municipalities with new tools and delivering real solutions to balance public safety with the safety and well-being of people living in encampments.
  • As part of Ontario’s responsible plan to keep communities safe, we are proposing new legislation that would, if passed, provide new enforcement tools to address the growing problem of homeless encampments and crack down on illegal drug use in parks and public spaces.
  • Our government will invest more than $75 million in programs that provide more long-term stable housing and temporary accommodations for those living in encampments.
  • We are also proposing amendments to the Trespass to Property Act that would, if passed, direct the court to increase the penalty for individuals who refuse to leave a property after they have received a notice to do so or are found likely to reoffend.
  • We will continue to stand with our municipal partners to keep our communities safe and support people in need.
