Ontario Reducing Wait Times for Police Record Checks

May 7, 2026

As part of our plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, we’re proposing changes to reduce wait times for police record checks.

Designated police services would be able to process vulnerable sector checks for applicants outside their jurisdiction to help reduce backlogs during periods of high demand.

The proposed changes would support efficient screening of applicants, helping people access jobs and volunteer opportunities faster while maintaining robust standards that will protect those in the vulnerable sector.

Amending the Police Record Checks Reform Act, 2015 is part of an upcoming legislative package to keep streets and communities safe, strengthen enforcement, crack down on crime and protect victims and vulnerable people across Ontario.
