Ontario Protecting Workers and Businesses From Latest U.S. Trade Actions

As the U.S. administration continues to threaten Ontario’s leading industries, our government remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the economy, defend our workers and lay the foundation for a strong and stable future.

In response to the latest U.S. import ban on Canadian alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles, Ontario is expanding eligibility under the Protect Ontario Financing Program (POFP) to ensure newly affected businesses can access the support they need to protect jobs and manage ongoing operational pressures.

Ontario is also expanding eligibility under the $150 million Ontario Together Trade Fund (OTTF) to help small and medium-sized Ontario businesses strengthen domestic supply chains, expand interprovincial trade and reshore supply chains away from the U.S.

Under Premier Ford’s leadership, our government has always advocated that no deal is better than a bad deal with the United States, and we will continue to be prepared for any outcome while standing up for Ontario workers and businesses.

As the U.S. shuts its market to Canadian alcohol today, Ontario’s direct-to-consumer agreement with eight other provinces gives our wineries, breweries and distilleries new customers within Canadian borders.

Ontario is also helping businesses diversify their exports by strengthening international trade partnerships beyond U.S. markets through targeted trade missions that connect them with new customers and investment opportunities around the world.

These actions, together with today’s expanded eligibility for our relief programs, is ensuring Ontario businesses are not only equipped to navigate the challenges of present day but can take the necessary steps to reduce long-term reliance on a single market and diversify their international exports.
