Ontario Protecting Communities By Expanding Correctional Facilities
July 17, 2025
- As part of our government’s plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, we’re investing half a billion dollars in the correctional sector to build more jails and create the necessary capacity to keep criminals behind bars.
- Following the success of previous modular builds in Kenora and Thunder Bay, we’re expanding correctional facilities in Niagara, Milton and Sudbury, adding 150 new beds and giving frontline staff the space they need to do their jobs safely.
- Since 2024, 110 additional beds have been added to adult correctional facilities across the province, with 665 more to be added by the end of 2026.
- By expanding correctional facilities and bringing new beds online faster, our government is strengthening our ability to hold criminals accountable and ensure that inmates serve their sentences in secure, modern spaces.
