Ontario Launches Advisory Panel to Help Double Medical Nuclear Isotope Production by 2030
July 30, 2025
- With global demand for medical isotopes and precision therapies rising fast, our government is taking decisive action to grow production of life‑saving isotopes right here in Ontario and power health innovation through Ontario’s clean nuclear advantage.
- Our government has launched the Nuclear Isotope Innovation Council of Ontario (NIICO) — a new expert panel that will help leverage Ontario’s world‑class nuclear fleet to double production of medical isotopes used for life‑saving diagnostics and therapies by 2030.
- The advisory panel will bring together leading experts from the medical, nuclear and research sectors — working with hospitals, health‑care providers and industry partners to drive innovation, expand production and secure supply chains to help Ontario remain resilient in an increasingly competitive global market.
- With more than 247,000 Canadians diagnosed with cancer each year — and over 40 million procedures globally relying on medical isotopes — Ontario is already a world leader in producing isotopes critical for targeted cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging.
- As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, the integrated energy plan lays the groundwork to expand the province’s nuclear advantage as an essential part of its life sciences strategy to drive innovations in health care, create good-paying jobs and grow a world-class biomanufacturing economy.
