Ontario Investing $26 Million to Train More Frontline Staff in Long-Term Care

January 14, 2026

Our government is delivering the quality of care and quality of life long-term care residents need and deserve.

We are protecting our long-term care system by investing $26 million to train nearly 3,000 new long-term care staff and enhance the care residents receive across Ontario.

Today’s investment builds on our $4.9 billion four-year staffing plan, which is focused on recruitment, training and retention and helped add more than 16,000 personal support workers and nurses to the provincial workforce.

Building on this momentum, Ontario is investing in two targeted initiatives:

  • Supporting Professional Growth Fund – An additional $5.5 million investment in 2025–26, bringing total funding to $15.5 million, to train and upskill current long-term care staff.
  • Living Classrooms – A $21 million investment to expand education within long-term care homes, including new Practical Nurse Living Classrooms, allowing students to stay in their home communities as they study and apply what they learn while they work with residents.

Our plan to improve care for residents is built on four pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe, and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need.
