Ontario Introducing Legislation to Strengthen Local Governance in Peel Region

  • Our government is taking action to protect communities and support growth by re-introducing legislation that transfers the delivery of key public works services from Peel Region to Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.
  • Informed by input from a wide range of stakeholders, local governments, and subject matter experts, the Peel Transition Implementation Act, 2025 would give jurisdiction over waste collection and regional roads to lower-tier municipalities to deliver high-quality services for residents.
  • Regional roads and related stormwater infrastructure would transfer from Peel Region to Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon on July 1, 2026.
  • Waste collection services would transfer from Peel Region to Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon on January 1, 2026, to align with the locally led decision.
  • As announced with Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smart Act, 2025, the government is exploring transferring water and wastewater services, with any future outcome maintaining public ownership.
  • Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is giving municipalities the tools they need to provide high-quality services to local taxpayers as they continue to grow.
