Ontario Giving Police More Tools to Monitor Registered Sex Offenders

• Ontario is the only province in the country with a provincial sex offender registry with a 94 per cent compliance rate.
• However, there is growing concern, especially among law enforcement, that the Ontario Sex Offender Registry needs to be updated to respond to advancements in technology, including social media, which has become the recruitment tool of choice for human traffickers.
• That’s why we will soon introduce legislation to sharpen Christopher’s Law to ensure the Ontario Sex Offender Registry continues to be an effective tool in protecting Ontario’s most vulnerable people.
• Proposed amendments would give police services additional tools to prevent, investigate and solve sex crimes, including crimes committed online.
• The legislation will also include a component that will prohibit an offender from legally changing their name to hide their identity.
• Working together with our policing partners, our government will continue to help police protect the most vulnerable and keep Ontario safe.
