Ontario Fast-Tracks Barrie to Sudbury Transmission Line with Full First Nation Partnership
February 9, 2026
In the face of rising demand and global uncertainty, Ontario is moving quickly to strengthen its electricity system by fast-tracking the Barrie to Sudbury Transmission Line.
The new 290-kilometre, 500-kilovolt line will power northern Ontario, create more than 9,000 jobs, and unlock long-term economic growth across the region.
With electricity demand in northern Ontario projected to rise 81 per cent by 2050, this project ensures the power is in place to support mining, housing, and electrification.
By addressing a critical bottleneck between northern and southern Ontario, the project will deliver more reliable power and improve system resilience province-wide.
Ontario is advancing economic reconciliation by building this project in partnership with First Nations, including Indigenous leadership and up to 50 per cent ownership through Hydro One’s Equity Partnership Model.
Under the leadership of Premier Ford, Ontario is planning ahead — delivering major, nation-building infrastructure that protects affordability, strengthens energy security, and supports workers and communities for generations.
