Ontario Expanding WSIB Coverage to More Frontline Care Workers

April 8, 2026

We are taking action to strengthen workplace safety protections for frontline care workers by extending mandatory WSIB coverage to all privately operated residential care facilities, retirement homes and group homes.

If passed, this legislative change would protect an additional 29,000 frontline care workers, such as personal support workers, registered nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and operations staff who support some of Ontario’s most vulnerable.

This expansion closes long-standing gaps and creates a level playing field to ensure workers doing the same job have the same protections, regardless of who operates the facility.

Workers will have access to WSIB’s comprehensive supports, including wage-loss benefits, medical coverage, and return to work services, helping them recover and safely get back on the job if they are injured or become ill.

These proposed changes are part of a broader package of measures we will introduce in the coming days to continue delivering on our plan to protect workers, strengthen Ontario’s workforce and make Ontario the most competitive place in the G7 to invest, create jobs, and do business.
