Ontario Expanding Adult Correctional Capacity to Keep Dangerous Offenders Behind Bars

May 14, 2026

As part of our plan to protect Ontario and keep dangerous offenders behind bars, our government is increasing adult correctional capacity by adding more than 2,500 permanent jail beds within the next decade.

We’re investing more than $3 billion to ensure correctional facilities can keep pace with tougher bail and sentencing laws, keeping violent and repeat offenders off our streets.

As part of a multi-pronged approach to increasing correctional capacity, we’re adding up to 255 permanent beds by November 2026, bringing up to 1,703 additional beds online through expanded projects already underway, and creating up to 610 more beds through rapid builds at existing institutions.

To support increased correctional capacity, our government is hiring more than 700 new frontline correctional staff, including correctional officers, nurses and critical support workers.

Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our investments will ensure that dangerous criminals are kept behind bars and off our streets, so that no offenders are ever let out due to a lack of capacity.
