Ontario Celebrates Arrival of First Northlander Train

January 14, 2026

Today is a great day for Northeastern Ontario and central Ontario communities as we move another step closer to bringing the Northlander back into service, restoring convenient rail travel for families and workers.

The Northlander will connect Toronto to Timmins, with a link to Cochrane, improving access to jobs, essential services like health care and education, and strengthening northern industries and the resource sector.

This project is a key part of our government’s plan to grow Ontario’s economy by supporting local industries, creating good-paying jobs, and driving growth across the north.

Northern Ontario is an economic engine, home to more than 65,000 local businesses and contributing over $55.5 billion to Ontario’s GDP in 2024.

Our government will continue to invest in the largest public transit expansion in Canadian history, creating jobs, tackling gridlock and protecting workers and businesses.
