Ontario Building the First Small Modular Reactor in the G7
- With Ontario facing unprecedented energy demand, our government’s plan to significantly expand energy infrastructure is essential to making Ontario the most competitive jurisdiction and the best place to invest and create jobs in the G7.
- To ensure the long-term prosperity of Ontario and future generations, our government is leading the world by announcing the green-light to construct the first of four Small Modular Reactor (SMR) in the G7 at the Darlington nuclear site.
- The Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) will create up to 18,000 Canadian jobs during construction, inject $500 million annually into Ontario’s economy, and contribute $38.5 billion to Canada’s GDP.
- Once operational, these four reactors will generate enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes and unlock new export opportunities abroad that create jobs here in Ontario, making Ontario energy secure, so we have a reliable and affordable energy supply that supports job creation and growth without relying on other jurisdictions.
- With over $1 billion already secured in foreign contracts, it is clear that the world is watching and turning to Ontario as a proven nuclear powerhouse.
- This nation-building project being built right here in Ontario will be led by Canadian workers using Canadian steel, concrete and materials to help deliver the extraordinary amount of reliable and clean power we will need to deliver on our ambitious plan to protect Ontario and unleash our economy.
- While the Liberals attempted to shut down the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station—our government is proud to stand by the over 65,000 nuclear workers in Ontario.
