Ontario and Toronto Building Historic Third Transmission Line to Power Downtown Toronto

June 4, 2025
  • Toronto’s electricity demand is expected to double by 2050 — the equivalent of building a second city on the grid. That’s why our government is taking bold action to build the infrastructure needed to power new homes, subways and jobs.
  • Working with the City of Toronto, we’re building a third electricity transmission line into downtown — ensuring Ontario’s largest city has the reliable, affordable energy it needs to grow.
  • This new transmission line will support major projects like the Ontario Line, new communities like East Harbour and the Port Lands, and 285,000 new homes — helping meet the city’s 10-year housing target and unlocking economic growth.
  • It’s part of Ontario’s first-ever Integrated Energy Plan, which ends fragmented planning and coordinates electricity, hydrogen, natural gas and fuels under one forward-looking strategy.
  • We’re acting now because construction will take 7 to 10 years. The sooner we move, the sooner we can deliver the energy needed to grow our economy, create jobs and keep life affordable.
  • While the Liberals and NDP opposed nuclear energy, stalled infrastructure, and left Toronto’s growth unplanned, our government is delivering the clean, reliable, made-in-Ontario energy system needed to power the future.
  • Our plan to significantly expand energy infrastructure is an important part of our work to protect Ontario by making the province the most competitive jurisdiction and best place to invest and create jobs in the G7.
