Ontario and Canada Investing More Than $228 Million to Protect Workers and Key Industries

March 12, 2026

As tariffs and global trade disruptions continue to impact Ontario’s economy, our government is taking further action to protect workers in sectors facing the greatest pressure, including softwood lumber, steel and automotive manufacturing.

Through a $228.8 million investment from the Government of Canada over the next three years, Ontario will help up to 27,000 workers retrain, upgrade their skills and stay competitive through the Canada Ontario Workforce Tariff Response.

Through Skills Advance Ontario, workers can stay employed, build new skills and move into in demand jobs, while employers receive training support to retain experienced workers in key sectors and high growth industries.

Applications are open and accepted on an ongoing basis through participating employers, training providers and employment service organizations.

These supports will help workers adapt, protect communities facing economic pressure and ensure Ontario remains strong, competitive and resilient in uncertain times.
