New Consumer Protection Act Bill
- Our government is committed to protecting consumers from unfair business practices such as aggressive sales tactics and misleading claims.
- That’s why we are updating the Consumer Protection Act to ensure Ontarians can shop with the confidence they deserve when buying goods and services at home, online and in their communities.
- This is part of our commitment to building a safer, fairer and stronger economy.
- The new CPA would, if passed, build on existing protections to strengthen consumer rights by:
o making it easier for businesses to comply with consumer protection rules.
o making it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions and memberships and providing fairer exit options from timeshares and long-term leases or rental agreements.
o introducing new enforcement powers to support consumers and better enable the ministry to hold bad actors accountable.
- The proposed new CPA reflects extensive consultation with the public and stakeholders over a three-year period and would make the increasingly digital marketplace easier to navigate for businesses and consumers alike.
