National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Ontario recognizes September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day to honour Survivors of Indian Residential Schools.

We encourage all Ontarians to learn about, and reflect on, the history of the Indian Residential School system and to honour and remember those who never made it home.

Ontario has led the country by committing $144.5 million to date to support the identification, investigation, protection, and commemoration of burials at former Residential Schools across the province, including $20 million announced in our 2026-27 Budget.

Additionally, Ontario is investing $7 million through the Indian Residential School Community Engagement Fund (IRSCEF) to support community-led healing, commemoration and initiatives that honour missing children, Survivors, families, and communities affected by the Residential School System.

Our government remains committed to continuing to partner with Indigenous communities and leaders to enhance public awareness and education on the legacy of the Indian Residential School system, and how to best commemorate the annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.
