Expansion of Strong Mayor Powers

• Our government is proposing to expand strong mayor powers to 169 additional municipalities starting May 1, 2025, to help drive key provincial priorities, including housing, transit, and infrastructure development.
• Building on the success of previous strong mayor expansions, this move will empower local leaders in these municipalities to act quickly and decisively, helping to deliver results for their communities.
• This expansion showcases our province’s commitment to cutting red tape and ensuring municipalities have the tools necessary to overcome barriers to housing development and economic growth.
• With these new powers, mayors in municipalities with six or more council members will have greater authority to align local decisions with provincial goals, such as fast-tracking housing approvals and infrastructure projects.
