Clean Electricity Regulations

Last Wednesday, Minister Lecce sent a letter to the federal government outlining serious concerns with the federal government’s proposed “Clean Electricity Regulations” or the CER.

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has found that implementing the CER would impose $35 billion in additional costs on Ontario electricity customers by 2050, driving up average household bills by$45-$50 annually later this decadeand$132-$168 annually by 2033. The CER would effectively act as a second, far more costly carbon tax.

Ontario already has one of the cleanest electricity grids in the world, with nearly 90% emissions-free power, and we are on track to achieve near-zero emissions by 2050 without the CER, thanks to our leadership in nuclear power and competitive energy procurement. Unlike the Liberals, who prioritize taxing families and businesses, we are focused on affordability, reliability, and investing in energy innovation to secure a stronger and more prosperous future for Ontario.

Minister Lecce is calling on the federal government to collaborate with us on a more practical, affordable approach that doesn’t punish families and businesses.
