2025 International Student Permit Allocations
- In response to the federal government’s unilateral decision to further reduce international study permits, our government remains squarely focused on delivering an education that prepares graduates for successful careers that meet Ontario’s current and future labour market needs.
- It is disappointing that yet again, the federal government made this decision without consulting Ontario institutions or reflecting our key labour sectors in their priority, postgraduate work permit programs.
- As we have been all along, we will continue to protect the integrity of the postsecondary education system by working alongside the sector to ensure the province is attracting the best and brightest international students to Ontario.
- Our post-secondary sector is going through a rebalancing right now and some difficult decisions are being made by our institutions to ensure they’re able to continue delivering a world-class education here for Ontario students.
- We have been and will continue to work with the sector to ensure that they’re able to keep doing exactly that: providing Ontario students with the education and skills they need for good-paying, in-demand jobs and careers.
- Which is why earlier this year we provided $1.3B to stabilize the sector – the single biggest investment increase in over a decade. That is on top of the more than $5 billion in operating funding we put into the sector every year so they can continue to deliver for our students.
- We’re in constant contact with our college and university partners to ensure their long-term success and sustainability. Currently, we’re sitting down with every single publicly funded institution in the province through our strategic mandate agreement process to better understand their enrollment trends and financial outlooks.
- That includes looking at long-term options to support STEM and other growing areas so that students can study in these fields in every corner of the province.
- We know our college and university partners deliver world-class opportunities and education for Ontario students. As we have been all along, we’re going to continue to be there for them – because when Ontario institutions succeed, Ontario students succeed.
